About This Lesson

This lesson is a series for teaching artistic literacy.  It is scaffolded for students to learn to describe dance (visually what is shown), how to derive meaning and provide their own interpretation of the piece, and justify their interpretation with evidence from the piece.  This can work with any piece you wish to show the students.  Most often, I try to find a contemporary company that can also be connected to current issues.  I also allow the students to first use the scaffolded worksheets to guide individual thinking, then work with peers to gain other viewpoints.  Additionally, students can also read text of a professional critic's review of the piece and compare and contrast their own interpretation.  Peer editing during the writing of this assignment is also implemented during this process.
